Career week was carried out from 14
September 2015 until 17 September 2015 where there were 10 speakers who invited
to give talks to all of us. Throughout the week, a fountain of knowledge in the
field of veterinary was gained and I enjoyed the talks very well. Besides, we
were able to strengthen our mission, vision as well as our ambition as a
veterinarian.
Being a veterinarian was indeed
challenging! Time, patience, passion, discipline, personality and quality,
knowledge and respect are the fundamental values that a veterinarian should have
as such values may greatly influence our job satisfaction and ultimately our
life satisfaction. There are a lots of veterinarian career options in which we
could join. For instance, becoming a poultry veterinarian, a small animal
clinical practitioner, an aquatic veterinarian, a wildlife veterinarian, equine
veterinarian, aquatic veterinarian etc.
It was
no exaggeration to say that my horizons had been widened. For example, as a
poultry veterinarian, he or she was responsible to assist farmers in
establishing well-managed livestock farms, perform regular visits to the
customers and gave professional recommendations and advice, help the customer
to resolve current issues and provide technical support using professional
skills and knowledge and so on. On top of that, as a clinical practitioner,
there were a lots to be learnt also such as the veterinarians were required to read
their clients’ mind, trim the nails of the pets in respond to clients’ request,
get the temperature from the pets’ rectum, obtain the urine of pets for urine
test and so on. As a wildlife veterinarian, the life maybe more hectic and more
challenging compared to others as there were a great diversity of animals,
limited study on specific animals, limited record on animal health condition
etc. It would be very challenging as all those skills and experiences perhaps
may not be acquired during the five years as a veterinarian student.
In
addition to that, last day of the event had undeniably inspired me to become a
successful veterinarian and I was urged to think thoroughly what I should
pursue in the future. For instance, Dr. Chua Chee Heng introduced us the
Holland’s Theory so that we can understand ourselves better and take the right
path in future. The importance of communication skill was stressed too.
After
graduating, I hope to become a small animal clinical practitioner as I love
small animals like dogs and cats! Dr. Melissa Phoon perhaps is my favourite
speaker as she told many experiences as a clinical veterinarian in UVH and how
to solve the problem confronted as a veterinarian. Furthermore, she motivated
us through the talk so as to inspire us to become a successful veterinarian.
